When it comes time to make a claim on your policy there are certain things you need to do. It may seem overwhelming, but just relax and take one step at a time. Of course, it would have been easier had you done this beforehand, but many people think “That will never happen to me.” For those of you who still have the chance, there are steps you can take now that will make it easy to make a claim should you ever need to. How Do I Make A Claim? Installment #2 explains what actions to take.
Things to do Beforehand
When it comes time to make a claim you will probably be super emotional and upset, maybe even depressed. Chances are you have just experienced some catastrophic event like a robbery, fire, tornado, earthquake, etc. That is why we recommend taking these steps now. Then if you should ever need to make a claim (and hopefully you never will), much of the work is already done for you. Before disaster strikes:
- Make a list of everything you have in your house that is valuable
- Document the value of each item
- Save receipts
- Take photographs
Organization and Documentation
Documentation and organization are of the utmost importance when it comes to filing a claim. If you are suffering a loss and haven’t done the above beforehand, here are some suggestions on how to collect the value of your personal property items that were destroyed or damaged:
- Go to a supercenter and utilize their wedding gift registry scanner to list and value your damaged items.
- Google values of items for replacement value costs.
- Interview family and friends. Their memories of items can be helpful.
- Download a free spreadsheet at: http://www.uphelp.org/library/resource/prepare-and-protect.
Should you require extra time to perform these important tasks, you can request an extension via a written request to your insurance carrier.
